Bournemouth Pavilion youth theatre goes from strength to strength

BH Live is putting youth theatre at the heart of Bournemouth Pavilion and more than 300 young people have already taken part in its performing arts programme.

The Grade II listed venue has Arts Award status and also works in conjunction with the Children’s University; an award winning organisation which encourages 5-14 year olds to develop new interests and skills through participating in exciting learning activities outside the normal school day.

Tours and drama workshops for local schools, supported by BH Live, are making the theatre accessible to new younger audiences. And often they are having their very first learning experience of the theatre and performing arts.

Youth theatre programmes and summer schools are also providing term-time school holiday coaching for aspiring young performers aged 9-16 years old.

“The uptake has been fantastic and over the past twelve months more than 6,000 hours of youth theatre coaching, workshops and school outreach sessions have been delivered, says Paul Griffiths, General Manager at Bournemouth Pavilion. “What makes our programme really special is that workshops and tours take place in the theatre and behind the scenes. We arrange for the youngsters to see a show and are often joined by professional performers who share their experiences at some of our workshops. Last year, for example, cast members from Horrible Histories gave a master class in performance which the class absolutely loved.”

Participants can also gain a qualification, recognised by higher education providers, and several are already working towards their Bronze Arts Award.

Places are still available for this term’s youth theatre sessions on Saturday mornings. School tours, concessions and limited free places are also available to encourage as much participation as possible.
